Biography

Virginie Hamel is an illustrator and mixed-media artist based in Marsh Lake, Yukon. Specializing in collage, she blends photographs, textured papers, watercolours, and pencil crayons to explore the complex relationship between humans and the natural world. Her work reflects a deep spiritual connection to place, weaving together elements of folklore and surrealism into compositions that evoke a sense of mystery and reverence.

Through the process of fragmentation and layering—both of images and colours—Virginie’s art mirrors the multifaceted nature of storytelling.

Working across both digital and traditional mediums, she begins by capturing her surroundings through photography, then digitally manipulates the colours before incorporating these images onto canvas. By blending these images with traditional media, the artist crafts dynamic, surreal, and tactile pieces that allow viewers to immerse themselves in the natural and illusory world from which she has gleaned her inspiration.

Virginie Hamel explore la relation sensorielle, émotionnelle et spirituelle des hommes avec la géographie, le folklore et le monde animal qui tisse la toile de notre identité. L’artiste travaille partir de collage-photo et de papiers de différentes textures et d’époque pour permettre de développer une trame narrative qui fait appel à la mémoire, au rêve et aux préoccupations du présent.

Son travail rend hommage aux dimensions multiples et magiques d’une histoire, à travers la fragmentation et la superpositions d’éléments.

L’artiste s’est établie au Yukon depuis une quinzaine d’années, après une période de voyage et d’étude en scénographie et en arts visuels. Ses plus récentes créations au crayon de couleur de bois et en collage présentent une interprétation illustrative de la forêt boréale, milieu dans lequel elle évolue. Les expositions Stories, Secret Kingdom, Forested et Night Owls font partie d’un parcours créatif qui interprète l’environnement forestier, ce qui s’y passe et ce qui nous échappe.
